Serving Others

To live in the Way of Christ is to allow love to lead us to serve others. In fact, central to our faith is the understanding that in serving we encounter the presence of God in others, and particularly in those who are poor and struggling, and are blessed. The St. Andrew faith community has  a long-established tradition of serving and advocating for just change both nearby and far away as a part of our life together. Below are a few examples our service and how you can get involved.

ARISE

The ARISE (Area of Renton Interfaith Shelter Endeavor) program is a partnership between the churches of REACH (Renton Ecumenical Association of Churches) and Catholic Community Services to provide supervised overnight shelter for 20-25 homeless men in the Renton area.  The men are pre-screened, and are housed from 9 pm – 7 am. Each is provided hot dinner, breakfast, and a sack lunch.  St. Andrew typically hosts ARISE in the month of June. Questions may be directed to kim@standrewpc.org

Food Bank

at the Food BankThe Salvation Army Renton Rotary Food Bank and social services Center is open 6 days a week, providing food, financial assistance, and case management. The pressure of soaring costs of food, heating, gas, and other essentials has many families needing assistance. As the economic situation deteriorates, the food bank is fast becoming a haven in the daily struggles to make ends meet. St. Andrew is a strong supporter of the food Bank, and traditionally collects a Food Bank Offering on the first Sunday of each month. We also conduct several special Food Bank offerings throughout the year.

Global Warmers

Warming the globe by providing warm hats, scarves, sweaters and blankets to cold and needy people around the world. Global Warmers meets every 1st Monday at 7 pm to knit, crotchet and socialize.

Mission Teams

In the interest of serving and expanding our awareness of individuals and communities beyond our own church and community, the St. Andrew Mission Team coordinates Mission Trips for youth and adult members of the congregation. In the spring of 2008, 12 youth and adults traveled to Gulfport, Mississippi to assist in reconstruction following Hurricane Katrina. In the summer of 2009, 11 youth and adults participated in a trip to the Tuitilla Reservation and Westminster Woods camp in northeast Oregon. During the summer months of 2010 an intergenerational group worked with Nature Consortium in their efforts to restore the Duwamish Greenbelt.

Mission Abroad

We have many ties to overseas ministries and missions, particularly through our commitment to disaster relief through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and through individual relationships. We have blessed and commissioned groups who have traveled to Nicaragua and Honduras. As a result of our close connection to Friends of the Orphans, we are currently keeping a close eye on developments in Haiti. You can find recent updates here.
